Year 1

Welcome to Year 1

Welcome to Year 1

We have an enjoyable year ahead for your child and we are sure that they will enjoy the topics that we are covering. Year 1 is the first year of Key Stage 1 and the children will be formally assessed every half term.

Children will be ‘set’ for their literacy RWI lesson and will receive spellings to learn weekly based on a particular sound with a few HFW/tricky words to learn also. Reading books will be changed once a week. This will  be on a Wednesday. Please make sure your child has read their books. We listen to the children read every day, as part of their Read, Write Inc lesson.

In June all Year 1 children will be assessed in their phonics ability through the compulsory government’s phonics screening check. This check will assess your child reading 20 real words and 20 nonsense words. For further information about this or to help your child at home please visit here:

http://www.ruthmiskin.com/en/resources/parent-tutorial-phonics-screening-check/

Children will be given spellings weekly to practise at home.

Thank you in advance for supporting your child with regular reading at home.
