In DT, Year 2 have been learning about healthy eating, exploring the five main food groups, identifying food from each group, learning how many portions of each we need in a day and discovering how each food group benefits our bodies.
Using this knowledge, the children planned a healthy packed lunch, thinking about which food groups they needed to include and how much of each. They also took into account their own personal likes and dislikes when it comes to food, ensuring their packed lunch was healthy but also personalised.
The children also explored where our food comes from, looking in more detail at the origins of and the process of making bread. We looked at the difference between white bread and brown bread, considering why brown bread is healthier. Lots of children who had previously opted to use white bread, chose to use ‘best of both – 50/50’ bread for their packed lunch in order to make their choices healthier.
Year 2 worked very hard when they made their own healthy packed lunch, carefully buttering their bread and using their knives very sensibly, especially when using sharper ones to cut their vegetables and fruit. Once all the healthy packed lunches were made, the children enjoyed tasting their work and evaluating the results.
